Hyaluronic Acid Powder

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Before we tell you how to make DIY hyaluronic acid serums for topical application, we think it will be a good idea to explain what hyaluronic acid is and why the serum is such an important part of any skin care routine.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is naturally found in the skin, where it helps to maintain elasticity by trapping moisture, which in turn may smooth the appearance of wrinkles. This is because HA is hydrophilic (water-loving) and binds to water, giving it a viscous, gel-like quality. HA is present in every cell in the body and serves numerous functions. Among many other things, it serves to lubricate joints, connective tissues, cartilage, and muscles. It also maintains eye, gum, and scalp health, as well as skin elasticity and hydration. However, with age the ability of the body to produce HA decreases, and we begin to experience signs of aging such as joint pain and stiffness, wrinkly skin, and other problems.

  • Moisturizing– Hyaluronic acid draws moisture to the skin and helps keep it there.
  • Soothing – It is great for irritated skin. The serum is fantastic to apply during or after collagen induction therapy (microneedling) , dry brushing, microdermabrasion or just anytime your skin needs a bit of extra hydration.
  • Protecting – Though you can barely feel that it is on your skin after it absorbs (other than your skin feeling smoother), the hydrating serum still provides a nice barrier against environmental damage to the skin.
  • Healing – Supports healing by promoting growth of new skin cells.
  • Anti-Aging – Hyaluronic acid serum helps reduce the appearance of  fine lines in addition to the benefits above, which would also assist with anti-aging skin care.

NOTE: One jar (1.5 ounces) of ScalpaJect Hyaluronic Acid Powder contains 9 teaspoons of product and can produce up to 18 ounces of finished product. Remember any formula you make, you should keep the HA ratio of 1%-1.5% (HA to Base)= ¼ cup (2oz) of base to 1 teaspoon of HA powder.

Retail information

For retailing Hyaluronic Acid finished products to customers, it’s best to make it using a preservative, and sell it in a 10ml. Syringe. Here is the breakdown:

1.5 ounces of HA powder creates 18 ounces of HA serum. 18 ounces equals 532 ml. You could sell each 10ml syringe for $40. Your cost for that 10ml syringe is roughly $1.50-$2.25 (and less if you buy it on sale). Remember if you plan to retail finished products, you'll need to purchase 10ml syringes. You can also sell per ounce.

Once you have made your serum and placed it into a syringe, wipe the syringe with a sterile wipe and place in a sterile envelope. Depending on your recipe, properly store the syringe. You should sell this product in the sterile envelope to prevent any contamination.

#1: Rosewater RECIPE

INGREDIENTS:

Directions:

Mix 1 teaspoon of hyaluronic acid powder with 2 ounces of rosewater. Shake the ingredients together vigorously so the powder dissolves properly. Now, add 2-4 drops of your selected essential oil (I used 2 drops of Neroli in the video below). Note: You can add any essential oil of your preference. This is where you learn the benefits of the oil to meet the needs of your formula.

Place in cold storage and shake the container every hour until a nice soft gel mixture is formed. Typically it takes a full 6-12 hours to take it’s gel form. With this simple recipe you must use within 7-14 days and keep in cold storage.

#2: PRESERVATION RECIPE

Ingredients:

Directions:

Place powder in a small clean jar. Pour in distilled water and glycerin and leucidal liquid preservative. Place a lid on the jar and shake well. It will look very chunky at this point, but don’t worry. As the hyaluronic acid absorbs the water the consistency will become more smooth. Place in the fridge for several hours (or overnight) to allow it to thicken before use.

Shelf-Life:

With a preservative, it can be stored at room temperature for up to two- three months and longer in cold storage.

A WORD ABOUT STORAGE

Preservatives keep the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast that develop in water-based skin care products at bay. Some preservatives prevent these irritants individually, but broad-spectrum preservatives such as Germall Plus and Leucidal liquid preservative can prevent all three.

Should you decide to incorporate a broad spectrum preservative, your serum can have a shelf life of up to three months when stored at room temperature.

If you forgo a preservative, you would need to store your homemade serum in the refrigerator for a shelf life of up to one-two weeks.

You should also keep your product in a tightly sealed, opaque container to avoid oxidation, which can reduce the efficacy of hyaluronic acid and some other ingredients such as vitamin C.

TAKE AWAY

DIY hyaluronic acid serums offer a cost-effective means of creating a customized, intensely hydrating skin care product. The ultimate advantage here is that you have full control of the ingredients which can be tailored precisely to your skin type and needs.

Some effective ingredients to include in a hyaluronic acid serum are vitamin A, C and E, rose water, peptides, retinoids, niacinamide and collagen. These can enhance the benefits of hyaluronic acid and provide additional benefits including anti-inflammatory and exfoliating effects, which can even and brighten skin tone, as well as reduce wrinkles, redness and sun damage.

To maintain your serum long term, store it in an air-tight, opaque bottle and add a preservative. This will prevent oxidation and delay the formation of yeast, mold and other bacteria.
